옛날에 젊은 목사 한 분이 계셨습니다.
Once there was a young pastor. 
목사님은 그의 교회 앞마당에 나무를 네 그루 심고,
그 나무들을 사랑으로 보살폈습니다.
He planted four trees in front of his church
and took care of them with love. 
첫째 나무는 음악을 좋아했습니다.
그래서 목사님은 첫째 나무를 위해 항상 음악을 들려주었습니다.
The first tree loved music.
So the young pastor always played music for the first tree. 
첫째 나무는 쑥쑥 자라서 커다란 나무가 되었습니다.
The first tree grew so well and became a big tree. 
목사님은 첫째 나무로 아름다운 피아노를 만드셨습니다.
그래서 첫째 나무는 행복했습니다.
The young pastor made the first tree into a beautiful piano.
The first tree was happy. 
둘째 나무도 아주 잘 자랐습니다.
목사님은 항상 둘째 나무 옆에서 주일 메시지를 연습하셨습니다.
둘째 나무는 목사님의 메시지 듣는 것을 좋아했습니다.
The second tree also grew well.
The pastor always practiced his sermons in front of the second tree.
The second tree was happy to hear the pastor’s sermons. 
목사님은 둘째 나무로 멋있는 강연용 단상을 만드셨습니다.
그래서 둘째 나무는 행복했습니다.
The young pastor made the second tree into a wonderful podium.
The second tree was happy. 
셋째 나무는 아름답고 예술적으로 자랐습니다.
The third tree grew to be very artistic and beautiful. 
목사님은 셋째 나무로 아름다운 의자를 만드셨습니다.
그래서 셋째 나무는 행복했습니다.
The young pastor made the third tree into a beautiful chair.
The third tree was happy. 
이제 교회에 필요했던 모든 것이 갖추어졌습니다.
멋진 피아노도, 웅장한 단상도, 아름다운 의자도 생겼습니다.
Now everything seemed to be ready. There was a nice piano.
There was a nice podium. There was a nice chair.
그런데도 교회에는 여전히 무엇인가 부족한 것처럼 보였습니다.
목사님은 곰곰이 생각하고 또 생각했습니다.
“무엇이 빠진 걸까?”
그는 교회에 십자가가 필요하다는 것을 깨달았습니다.
But the church still seemed incomplete.
The young pastor thought and thought.
He realized that the church needed a cross. 
“무엇으로 십자가를 만들까…?”
목사님은 생각했습니다. 그때 그는 작은, 넷째 나무를 보셨습니다.
“How can I make a cross?” the young pastor thought.
Then he saw the small, fourth tree. 
넷째 나무는 다른 커다란 나무들에게
가려진 탓에 잘 자라지 못했습니다.
The fourth tree didn’t grow well under the three gorgeous trees. 
다른 나무들은 그 작은 넷째 나무를 업신여겼습니다.
넷째 나무도 이런 자신이 아무 곳에도 쓸모없는,
있으나 마나 한 나무라고 생각했습니다.
The other trees despised the small, fourth tree.
The fourth tree also thought that she was nobody,
and good for nothing.
그러나 목사님은 넷째 나무야말로 십자가를 만들기에
가장 걸맞다고 생각했습니다.
그 나무는 세상 사람들로부터 무시당하고 버림받으셨던
예수님을 가장 많이 닮았기 때문입니다.
But the young pastor realized that the fourth tree made a perfect cross, because it resembled
Jesus who was despised and rejected by people. 
목사님은 넷째 나무로 십자가를 만드셨습니다.
The young pastor made a cross with the fourth tree.
사람들은 아름다운 피아노, 단상,
그리고 의자를 보고 칭찬했습니다.
하지만 그들이 가장 많은 위로를 받고 감동했던 것은 바로
넷째 나무로 만들어진 십자가였습니다.
The people loved the beautiful piano, podium, and chair.
But they were the most comforted
and touched by the cross made from the fourth tree.
