신발 네 켤레가 있었습니다.
등산화, 운동화, 신사화, 그리고 평범한 신발이었습니다.
낡아서 닳아빠진 신발들이었습니다.
모두 일을 그만둘 때가 찾아왔지요.
There were four pairs of shoes.
They were hiking shoes, running shoes, dress shoes,
and regular shoes.
They were all retired.
They were all worn out.
등산화가 말했습니다.
“나는 높고 낮은 많은 산에 내 주인님을 데려가곤 했어.”
Hiking shoes told the others,
“I used to carry my owner to the mountains, high and low.”
“눈이나 비로 젖은 땅, 바위투성이인 땅과 평평한 땅을 다니면서
어려움을 견뎠지.”
“I went through snow and rain, rocks and plains,
enduring all kinds of hardship.”
“주인님과 에베레스트산에 간 적도 있어.
세상에서 제일 높은 산 말이야!”
“I even carried my owner to Mount Everest,
the highest mountain in the world!”
운동화가 다른 이들에게 말했습니다.
“나는 내 주인님과 항상 길을 달렸어. 이른 새벽부터 늦은 밤까지.”
Running shoes told the others,
“I used to carry my owner on the road all the time - from early morning to late night.”
“잠시도 쉴 틈이 없었어. 내 밑바닥은 매일 쿵쿵 땅에 세게 부딪혔어.
많이 아팠지. 하지만 나는 견뎌냈어.”
“I ran all the time. My soles were pounded every day.
But I endured.”
“나와 달린 내 주인님은 심지어 올림픽 금메달을 땄어!
나는 스스로 참 자랑스러워.”
“I ran until my owner became an Olympic gold medalist!
I am so proud of myself.” 
신사화가 말했습니다.
“나는 세상의, 여러 중요한 곳들로
내 주인님을 데리고 다니곤 했지요.”
Dress shoes told the others,
“I used to carry my owner to many important places.” 
“저는 유엔과 국제 정상회담, 그리고 여러 회의에 참석했습니다.
저는 늘 깨끗하게 몸단장을 해야 했어요.
중요한 장소에 나가기 위해 만반의 준비를 해야 했거든요.”
“I went to the United Nations, international summits,
and conferences.
I had to clean myself all the time
because I had to be prepared to go out to important places.”
“저는 세계의 수준 높은 호텔과 식당을 두루 다 가 보았어요.
저는 이런 제가 자랑스러워요!”
“I went around the world in first class hotels and restaurants.
I am so proud of myself!” 
평범한 신발이 다른 신발들에게 말했습니다.
“저는 그저 평범한 신발 한 켤레랍니다.
저는 주인님을 모시고
세상에 알려지지 않은 곳들을 주로 다녔습니다.
사람들은 왜 주인님이 그런 머나먼 곳들을 찾아가시는지
이해하지 못했습니다.”
Regular shoes told the others,
“I am just a regular pair of shoes.
I used to carry my owner to remote places,
unknown to most people.
Many people didn’t understand why my owner went to
such far away places.” 
“제 주인님은 선교사입니다.
저는 그분을 모시고 시골 교외로 향했고
깊은 숲속의 마을들에 다다랐습니다.”
“My owner was a missionary.
I carried him around the countryside
and then to villages in the forest.”
“어느 날, 제 주인님은 저를 신발이 필요한 마을 원주민 중
한 사람에게 주었습니다.”
“One day, my owner gave me to one of the village people.”
“그 가족들은 저를 얻고 나서 행복해 보였습니다.
아버지가 저를 얼마간 신으셨고,
그 후에 저를 아들에게 넘겨주셨습니다.
그 아들은 저를 얼마간 신고 나서 저를 동생에게 물려주었습니다.
저는 많은 주인님과 함께하게 된 거죠.”
“The family was happy to have me.
A father had me for a while.
Then he gave me to his son.
Then the son gave me to his brother.
I had many owners.”
“저마다 다른 크기의 발들에 저를 맞추어야만 했습니다.
저는 기꺼이 그렇게 했습니다.
저는 특별한 것이 없는 신발입니다.
하지만 저는 그런 삶을 살 수 있어서 정말 행복합니다.”
“I had to accept each different pair of
feet that needed me.
I am nothing special,
but I am happy about who I am.
